We used to sell a limited selection of natural treatments and cleaners for solar water features: be they pumps, solar fountains or combination solar birdbath fountains.
But: just because something's "natural" doesn't mean it's harmless if used improperly. The verdict is still out with the scientists, but even natural enzymes are now believed to potentially cause birth defects in birds and other small animals.
Animals with shorter life spans -- like birds and frogs -- often are "indicators" of what can happen to humans over longer periods of time.
Regardless of what you use in your pond or fountain, have to be very careful to the righ chemical for the right water feature . More importantly, read the instructions carefully about how much to use and when.
Remember: water evaporates, and in warm or sunny weather water in smaller water features can evaporate quickly. This means that whatever treatment you use, natural or otherwise, will quickly become far more concentrated.
Most of the time: less is more! Some people have the time to check levels of water features daily; most of us do not.
We always recommend using far less treatment than on the packaging. You're probably going to get the same positive results, with far less risk of negative impacts to plants, wildlife, or even people (especially children who can be drawn to water.)
Remember: what's good for the pool or spa isn't right for something that animals or people will drink.
